What is the difference between cast flanges and forged flanges?

Released on Jan. 03, 2020

Cast flanges are often compared with cast flanges, but do you really understand the difference and process between cast flanges and cast flanges? Today the square flange units supplier will show you the difference between cast flanges and forged flanges.

First of all, cast flanges, the shape and size of the blank are accurate, the processing volume is small, and the cost is low, but there are casting defects (porosity, cracks, inclusions); the internal structure of the casting is poor, forging flanges are generally better than casting The flange contains low carbon and is not easy to rust. The forgings are streamlined, the structure is dense, and the mechanical properties are better than the cast flange.

The advantages of castings are that they can produce more complex shapes and lower costs; the advantages of forgings are that the internal structure is uniform, and there are no harmful defects such as pores and inclusions in the castings; the difference between the casting flange and the forged flange from the production process, For example, centrifugal flanges are a type of cast flange.

The centrifugal flange belongs to the production flange of the precision casting method. This type of casting has a much finer structure and a lot of quality improvement than ordinary sand mold casting, and it is not easy to have problems such as loose tissue, porosity and trachoma.

The forging process generally consists of the following processes, that is, selecting high-quality steel blanks, heating, forming, and cooling after forging. The methods of forging include free forging, die forging and membrane forging. During production, different forging methods are selected according to the quality of the forgings and the number of production batches.

Basic process of free forging: During free forging, the shape of the forging is gradually forged into the blank through some basic deformation processes. The basic processes of free forging include upsetting, drawing, punching, bending and cutting. Die forging is called model forging, and the heated billet is placed in a forging die fixed on a die forging device and forged. Basic process: blanking, heating, pre-forging, final forging, punching, trimming, quenching and tempering, shot peening.

Advantages of forging

1. It greatly reduces the rheological resistance of metal, and its total pressure is equivalent to 10-20% of ordinary die forging. Save equipment investment and power consumption.

2. Significantly improve the plasticity of metal materials, good fluidity of billets, easy filling of mold cavities, high dimensional accuracy of workpieces after forging, small machining allowance, and even no machining.

3. Isothermal forging technology can make forgings with complex shapes and thin walls and high tendons in one shot; while common die forging technology requires special forming for special difficult-to-deform alloys.

4. The material utilization rate is high. Compared with ordinary die forging, the metal consumption is reduced by more than 50%.

Generally speaking, the quality of forging flanges is better. The main materials of forged flanges are carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. The main standards are national standard, electric standard, American standard, German standard, Japanese standard, etc. The main anticorrosive treatments are oiling and galvanizing. Forged flanges have better pressure and temperature resistance, and are generally suitable for high pressure and high temperature working environments. Of course, the price will be relatively high.
